Meet RuthAnn
BSc(Hons), MSc, PhD, CSP, HCPC
Hi, I’m Dr RuthAnn Fanstone, a physiotherapist specialising in scar rehabilitation. My commitment to improving outcomes for people with scarring began early in my career in burns and plastic surgery. Since then, I’ve spent about 30 years helping people recover from burns, trauma and scarring — easing symptoms, restoring movement and rebuilding confidence. I’ve treated thousands of scars, from the smallest to the most extensive and complex burn injuries, combining deep research knowledge with hands-on expertise.
In 2025 I founded Scarchange, my own specialist service, after years of creating and leading scar services for other organisations. This step allows me to bring everything I’ve learned directly to you.
The strapline I chose for Scarchange — “Changing scars, changing lives” — isn’t just a phrase. It reflects what I’ve witnessed: the power of comprehensive, skilled, compassionate treatment to transform both scars and the lives of those who live with them, and it expresses my hope for every person seeking treatment for their scar.
Alongside patient care, I’ve worked in and led physiotherapy teams in major NHS burn and plastic surgery units, helped design and establish The London Scar Clinic, developed the burn rehabilitation model for The Katie Piper Foundation and supported many burn survivors in rebuilding their lives. I’ve pioneered new scar treatments and approaches, including introducing LPG therapy for scarring in the UK. Through DrContracture, I advocate to reduce the global burden of burn contractures. My work and training across 14 countries have given me a global perspective and the ability to create practical, innovative, context-specific solutions, often in challenging circumstances.
Education and research are at the heart of my work. I hold a PhD on burn scar contractures, with publications on the topic, and an MSc in Health Service Management. I’ve designed and delivered burns and scar training worldwide — from high-income countries to conflict and low-resource settings. I have developed scar-focused content for an MSc programme and pioneered Scar Academy UK, running multidisciplinary training for healthcare professionals.
I’ve worked with Interburns, WHO, UK-Med and other global organisations on education and service development and am a frequent speaker at burn, scar and wound conferences around the world. I also serve as Managing Editor of Scars, Burns & Healing, a PubMed-listed journal advancing evidence-based care.
I have had the privilege of knowing and working with Ruthann for many years. She is a true leader in burn rehabilitation and scar management, her knowledge, expertise, and skill are second to none. What truly sets her apart is her passion for burn care and for her patients. For Ruthann, this work is not just a job, it is her vocation. She embodies the same vision and values we hold at The Katie Piper Foundation, and I am deeply grateful for the time that both myself and our beneficiaries have had to learn from her and receive her care.
In the burn community, Ruthann is a guiding light and a beacon of hope. She is always professional, ethical, and committed to the highest standards. Through my work, I often meet people whose lives have been transformed by her. I know from personal experience that you never forget your physio, and I know many patients who feel exactly that way about Ruthann.
Katie Piper OBE
My greatest teachers have been my patients — people with scars who show extraordinary strength and resilience, helping me understand their needs, what works and what doesn’t. Their courage and determination to be free of scar symptoms drive me to keep learning, collaborating and innovating so that I can offer the best possible care to improve outcomes and help you achieve your potential and goals.
If you’re facing the challenges of a scar — whether new or long-standing — you don’t have to navigate it alone. I’ll listen carefully, explain what’s possible, and guide you with compassionate, evidence-informed care. I don’t work in isolation; I am connected to many leading scar experts - when helpful, we’ll work with other professionals, so you receive the most comprehensive support possible.
Now that you know a little about me, here’s what I can offer you…
Expert care
With a background in research and years of focusing solely on scars (scars are the only thing I treat, every day, not just one thing I treat or treat once in a while) I bring deep scientific understanding and extensive practical experience. I’ve visited leading centres internationally to expand my knowledge, ensuring I can offer you the best possible care. I know how scars form, how they behave, and how to separate evidence-based treatments from popular ideas. At the same time, I recognize that healing isn’t always measurable by data alone, and I remain open to approaches that support recovery beyond science. You’ll receive care that is evidence-based, thoughtful, and tailored to your needs.
Compassionate care
Scars are never just skin-deep. From my extensive experience, I understand how scars can deeply affect your self-image, emotions, and daily life. I respect your limits and work with you to make treatment manageable. That’s why I begin with a thorough assessment — of both your scar and your story. I listen to your hopes and concerns, share my professional perspective, and prioritize what matters most to you.
Courageous care
Not every scar journey is straightforward. I face challenges alongside you — looking honestly at what your scar means for your life and exploring solutions, even if you feel stuck. I’m known for helping people who believed they’d “tried everything.” Science and practice are always advancing, and I stay up to date with current treatments while remaining open to new approaches. I will never overpromise or over/undertreat. You’ll always receive clear guidance, and I encourage your questions and feedback. I am here to support your recovery, including between appointments when needed. If you need someone to advocate for you and your scar, I can help.
Comprehensive care
I understand the far-reaching impact that scars can have on multiple areas of life, and sometimes the best care involves multiple experts. I have an extensive network of trusted experts that I can draw on to ensure you’re connected to the right people. This team-based approach gives you options — and with options comes hope. Whether your scar is recent or many years old, we explore every possible path together.
Living with scars can be hard work — I’m here to lighten your load, not add to it. I understand scars, and I care about supporting you.
